Environmental Toxins

* Carpets: That new carpet smell is actually caused by chemicals used to adhere the carpet to its backing. One of those is 1-3 Butadiene, a potent toxin to your brain that is also a carcinogen at any level.  The older the carpet is, the less Butadiene it contains, because it off-gasses over the
years. You can spray the carpet with a sealer to help prevent the chemical from effecting your brain. Also look for wool carpets, which are woven to their backing and contain less chemicals. Another tip: Crank the thermostat
in your home up to 95 and take a vacation for a week or two. The chemicals will bake out of the carpet. When you return, open your doors and windows to air out the house.

* Dry cleaning has solvents such as tetrachloroethylene and trichloroethylene. They affect vision and hearing, and are also listed as carcinogens. Look for cleaners who use steam instead of solvents. If your only option is a dry cleaner who uses solvents, be sure to remove the plastic cover from your clothing and air it out for a few weeks before wearing it.

* Tile cleansers contain dimethylbenzene, or xylene, which may lead to brain damage, infertility, respiratory problems and neurological damage.  Clean your bathroom with nontoxic products like baking soda.

* Microwave ovens can release phthalates in plastics such as baby bottles.  They are "hormonal mimics" for estrogen that may cause young girls to develop prematurely and young boys to have estrogen-like effects. Choose a glass baby bottle instead, and use hot water to warm it up.

* Air fresheners contain benzene, a carcinogen, and toluene, terpenes and furans, which can lead to neurological and behavioral changes. Instead of using air fresheners, go with scented candles.
